‘Box’, a popular figure at the RSL Club, where he served as a Vice President, died in a truck crash on October 31st, 2024 on the Bruce Highway.

Box’s wife, Erinne and their three children were in attendance at the official unveiling of the plaque on Saturday, June 20th, to share a heartfelt moment with members of the club.

‘Box’ Hargreaves served as a Vice President on the Oakey RSL sub-branch executive from 2020 until his death. He had been on the RSL committee for 9 years.

“Box told it how it was,” Oakey RSL Vice President Phil Lawrence said.

“He was one of nature’s gentlemen.

“He was always happy.

“Me being an ex-truck driver, we just clicked.

“I was talking to him just 30 minutes before the smash.”

Former Oakey RSL President Mark Carter described Box as a ‘gentle giant’ and said that he would be deeply missed.

“He came up with the idea of the hats so that members could be protected from the sun at official events,” Mr Carter said.

Wearing an Oakey RSL Akubra has subsequently become common among sub-branch members at events such as ANZAC Day.
