CWA House residents talk radio
ABC Southern Queensland breakfast radio presenter David Illiffe visited CWA House for morning tea, talking to residents about the business of radio.
Mr Illiffe came straight from his Friday morning radio shift.
Resident Carole Wieck asked him a question about radio equipment while other residents asked about Toowoomba radio identities of decades gone by.
The breakfast radio presenter said he doesn’t like the question “Who is the most famous person you’ve interviewed?”... as often ordinary people have the more extraordinary stories.
Mr Illiffe said his most enjoyable interview, however, was talking with an American engineer who worked on the Apollo missions.
Radio hasn’t all been happy sailing - he recounted how an irate listener once pulled him aside in the former ABC Shop at Toowoomba's Grand Central complex and told him he’d “cut his legs off” if he kept on talking over or playing music during the start of the news.
Mr Illiffe says he now gets the transitions to the news right 85 per cent of the time.
