Farmers prepare for upcoming barley season
On Wednesday, 17 April, farmers from across the district joined Pursehouse Rural for a barley workshop, the latest in a string of informative seminars on varying topics relevant to the agricultural industry.
The team from Pursehouse Rural Clifton was joined by industry experts including AGF Seeds and Mort & Co. Fertilisers.
After a quick barbecue lunch, discussions got underway, kick started by Kyle Merritt, head of Research and Development at Mort & Co. Fertilisers.
Kyle presented on the new Terrus and Terrus Pro granulated carbon-based organic fertiliser brought to the market by Mort & Co.
The company utilises waste product from its feedlots, processing it into a granulated product which is then used by growers to improve soil health in an holistic approach to soil management on farm.
Next up were Will Bazley and Craig Altmann from AGF Seeds who took the opportunity to give an overview of seasonal conditions and discuss with the group the available barley varieties suitable for the district and current planting conditions.
The workshop was wrapped up by Pursehouse Rural Agronomist Jack Hyem who discussed the threat of fall army worm and best practices for avoiding damage to emerging barley and oat crops.
He too gave an overview of seasonal conditions and some tips for pre-planting to ensure optimal yields.
Pursehouse Rural Clifton staff said they would like to thank all growers who attended the day and guest speakers who made the workshop possible.
Keep an eye on their social media channels for updates and information on future events.
