Growers congratulated on a great season

The Show Society hosted a presentation evening on March 19th to celebrate the success of the Farm Produce and Field Crop Competition of the Pittsworth Show.

First prize in the Chickpeas competition went to Clemens Waetjen (Yarramalong Farming Enterprises), presented by Ben McIntyre (P.B. Agrifood) and Sammie Fuhlbohm (Chief Steward, Field Crop Competition).
First prize in the Chickpeas competition went to Clemens Waetjen (Yarramalong Farming Enterprises), presented by Ben McIntyre (P.B. Agrifood) and Sammie Fuhlbohm (Chief Steward, Field Crop Competition).

Show Society President Paul Fuhlbohm estimated the last time the presentation was held after the actual show, was about 20 years ago after a particularly late season.

This year, it wasn’t the season that delayed the presentation, which is usually held on the Village Green, but the downscaling of show events due to
ex-Tropical Cyclone Alfred.

Dave Taylor from Taylor Farm Consultancy, and one of the judges of the field crop competition, said he enjoyed seeing the different aspects of how everyone runs their farming operations differently, and to talk with growers.

“[Was] a very blessed year in terms of crop yields and health,” Mr Taylor said.

Results from the field crop competition were as follows:

WINTER CROP

The winter crop competition had four paddocks entered into the barley section, and 15 paddocks entered into the wheat and chickpeas section each. There were not enough entries for an irrigated section.

Dryland Barley: 1. Schelberg Farms at Mount Tyson, Ashley Schelberg - Rattler; 2. Yarramalong Farming Enterprises at Pampas, Clemens Waetjen - Laperouse; 3. Waco Farming Pty Ltd at Brookstead, Wayne Saal - Yeti.

Dryland Wheat: 1. Flegler Farming at Bongeen, Guy Flegler - Hellfire, winner of the President’s Cup Field Wheat Competition donated by R. C. Krieg; 2. Brazil Farming at Brookstead, Paul Dieckmann - Borlaug; 3. Woodlands Partnership at Brookstead, David and James Bailey - Borlaug.

Chickpeas: 1. Yarramalong Farming Enterprises at Pampas, Clemens Waetjen - Captain; 2. Brazil Farming at Brookstead, Paul Dieckmann - Seamer; 3. Elsden Farms at Brookstead, Paul Elsden - Captain.

  SUMMER CROP

The judges of the summer crop competition decided to run one class as very few crops were irrigated and dryland was well watered due to seasonal conditions. Twenty-three paddocks were entered.

Dryland cotton had eight paddocks entered and irrigated cotton had 11 paddocks entered, so 19 paddocks were judged in one day. A mammoth effort!

Dryland Sorghum: 1. Bursbrook Farming at North Branch, Clinton Petersen - Sentinel, winner of the Dryland Sorghum Champion donated by Agforce Queensland; 2. P.L. & P.L. Hood at North Branch, Peter Hood - Buster; 3. Bursbrook Farming at North Branch, Clinton Petersen - Buster.

Dryland Cotton: 1. & 2.  R.W.C. & L.C. Dowding at North Branch, Bob Dowding - 748/619; 3. Rabswan Pty Ltd at Bongeen, John Cameron -  746.

Irrigated Cotton: 1. Yarramalong Farming Enterprises at Pampas, Clemens Waetjen  - 606; 2. Swainston Farming Company at Norwin, Bruce Yarrow - 746; 3. Baartz Farming at Norwin, Don Baartz - 746.

The Noel Perry Memorial Shield for Champion Cotton Crop, which is selected from both dryland and irrigated sections, went to Bob Dowding at North Branch.

Mr Fuhlbohm congratulated the entrants on their efforts and challenged all growers to be proactive in entering for next year’s show.

“Personally, I’ve always said we should be able to fill that basketball stadium down there with produce, not just one corner,” he said.

“I would love to see the farm produce section grow out of its spot.

“Thank you everybody and good luck for next season.”
