Mesken makes it eight out of nine
Since moving to Toowoomba, Biddeston born-and-bred Carlee Mesken has continued the run of AFL Darling Downs premiership medals she started winning nine years ago. A Q&A reveals...
1. How does it feel to have won the cup? Is this your first premiership?
It’s an amazing feeling! I’ve been very privileged and have won the cup
with our girls eight times. But, it doesn’t lose it’s value or feeling, we have worked really hard all season.
Our coach Nev Jericho announced his retirement after the grand final, so it’s a nice reward to the season and a great way to end his coaching career.
2. I understand you brought up a milestone recently. Can you tell us about that?
I did, in round 17, I played my 100th game for the Women’s Team.
This is a real honour, as I’m only the third person to do this for the Women’s Team at the club.
3. What’s your position in the team. Have you switched around a lot?
My main position is wing/midfield, but I do go into defence depending on the players available on game day.
4. The Darling Downs is known for being a pretty strong rugby area - league and union. How did you get into Aussie Rules?
League and Union definitely have a stronger following in the region and I was honestly surprised when I got myself into Aussie Rules, as all my friends and family were always involved in league.
However I became friends with Lauren Jericho (our coach’s daughter) while attending High School at Concordia.
She encouraged me to come along to a training session, I got hooked, made some great friends and eight years later I still can’t give it up.
5. For someone living out here, juniors or seniors who wants to play Aussie Rules - where should they go?
I would also recommend coming to Toowoomba Tigers.
They are a great club, we have a dedicated committee and great coaching staff.
It’s a very welcoming club and the players/families at the club have built a great culture.
They can be contacted via Facebook and Instagram or toowoombaafc@hotmail.com.
Otherwise, Jana at Darling Downs AFL is always contactable to lead you in the right direction or help organise Auskick for local schools.
