Soils Ain’t Soils – Learn about your Soils!
Cameron Leckie your Regional Soil Coordinator is coming to Allora.
The Condamine Catchment Management Association (CCMA) has been lucky enough to entice Cameron to join them at the Allora Senior Citizen rooms on Tuesday 23rd April from 9.30 until 10.30am with information about our local soils.
Soil is fundamental to so many aspects of life, yet it is something generally taken for granted.
It is critically important for our collective future that we manage our soil resources with a long-term view in mind.
Australia’s soils are, on the whole, in poor condition and deteriorating. That was the conclusion of the 2021 State of the Environment report.
To address this very concerning issue, the first ever National Soil Strategy is being implemented. Part of the Strategy includes the creation of Regional Soil Coordinator positions, funded by the National Landcare Program.
Aim of program is to increase the skills and knowledge of the wide range of people working with soils, from farmers to agronomists and soil field and laboratory technicians who will be a key part of improving the condition of our soil.
To identify the gaps in soil capacity and capability across the region, Cameron is developing a Regional Soil Improvement Plan that will identify priorities and barriers to the adoption of soil best management practices.
The Plan will be provided to the Australian Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (DAFF) and used to inform future programs with the ultimate aim of improving soil health.
If you are a land manager or interested in soils and would like to attend this free event please contact Mary-Lou Gittins (CCMA Secretary) on 0429642092 for catering. Morning tea will be provided.
